Happy Birthday, John Keel! – Not an Authority on Anything

March 25th would have been John Keel’s 90th birthday, and Keel site-minder Doug Skinner posts a picture of Keel as a boy. Government bibliographer Catoe admonishes John in A Letter From Lynn Catoe, December 14, 1967. The letter reveals someone concerned about the way Keel seems to be going, and incidentally gives us a sense that Lynn Catoe would have been a lot of fun to know. Rich Reynolds definitely thinks Keel was going down a dark path towards the end of his life, as Rich pens in We Are in the Realm of Madness, UFOs and Otherwise. Rich draws a sharp distinction between Keel’s earlier and later works. One might ask how much of Keel’s descent was due to his collisions with those outstandingly outre folks, the subject of Nick Redfern’s The Men in Black: Shape-Shifters? Nick adds another capability to MIB repertoires. It’s also fascinating that, while Lynn Catoe warned John about “the men in white jackets” and Nick’s men wore black, both Catoe and Redfern mention black Cadillacs as the fearsome guys’ transportation of choice!
