Special File–Volume Three (3): A Letter to Mary Hyre (November 3, 1967) – John Keel

“There are weird and perhaps frightening days ahead for all of us,” says John Keel in this letter to his reporter contact about “the strange doings in Point Pleasant, WV.” Possibly the missive’s core feature is the stunning prophecy of a likely “disaster in the Pt. Pleasant area, which will not seem to be related to the UFO mystery” (called out in red in the letter copy). Exactly six weeks after the date of this letter, the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant with Gallipolis, Ohio, would collapse, killing 46 people. This tragedy punctuated and was connected to the growing mystery of a series of sightings of a strange and frightening creature dubbed “Mothman.” Keel prophesies some more in Special File–Volume Three (4): A Letter to Mary Hyre (November 11, 1967). Keel also mentions rumors that are current about him, including that he was a secret agent, likely for the CIA. But in his verdict Men in Black: Not Human Nick Redfern rejects the popular notion that MIBs “are the secret agents of a clandestine agency within government.” Nick’s analysis of the primary source material for MIBs–the witness testimony–indicates that MIBs’ appearance and capabilities have a decidedly paranormal tinge. Nick also emphasizes John Keel’s contributions to the development of the MIB phenomenon. (WM)
