Dr. Shuker recalls some of his favorite books from his youth, landing to rest on a particular story about giant grasshoppers that had infested a Wisconsin apple orchard. Clearly the story was a hoax, so it’s actually the doctor’s explanation of his methodology for determining photographic fakes that is the high point of this piece. Next, he brings us Are Fruit Bats Flying Primates? Another Retrospective From Out Of The Archives. In this instance, he examines the data behind a past theory that a species of fruit bat was in fact a primate–like monkeys and humans. That thought struck us as a little bit terrifying, but the good doctor put those fears to rest with his tireless examination and analysis of the facts. We rather suspect Karl Shuker would have made one heck of a good teacher–or therapist–if writing hadn’t worked out for him. (CM)
