The Roots of Confusion – Herald Tribune

It turns out that Roots is more than an acclaimed tv series (or two). In fact, plants may have something to say about how we imagine possible alien intelligence. So argues Billy Cox, citing the work of an Italian botanist. Don’t brush this off as silly; Stefano Mancuso has worked with the European Space Agency and his experiments have flown on the International Space Station and the Endeavour space shuttle. Cox’ article on this thinker and his work reminds us that we just might have more than a sample of One (if we dare to exclude whales and octopi) from which to extrapolate/hypothesize ET sentience, knowledge collection, thought, and reasoning. It challenges us “to move beyond the conceits of our anthropocentric definitions of intelligence and consciousness.” (WM)
