The Weirdest Minds in the World – Psychology Today

Research has confirmed what was once only suspected. Using the example of parking tickets accumulated by UN officials in New York City, a study conducted by two economists, Raymond Fisman and Edward Miguel, concluded that “independent measures of corruption in the various countries correlated with the numbers of their diplomats’ unpaid parking tickets.” Evidently paying parking tickets is a characteristic of societies that author Steven Henrich refers to as Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic. You read that correctly. Just what we needed: a new definition of WEIRD. For this next report, use whatever definition you want, because just like The Doors told us, people are strange.  Dream Logic isn’t just the stuff of surreal television programs and nighttime cognitive meanderings. It is as important to the study of human psychology as our ordinary logic. (Although the very existence of ordinary logic in some individuals is arguable.) Dream logic may represent the use of imagination during sleep, and may be key to understanding the best and worst parts of ourselves. (CM)
