Watch the Skies – Magonia

Three articles related to publishing and out-of-this-world things. The universe is a very strange, grand, and old place. It has intrigued and guided humans since before recorded times; indeed, some of the first techniques for marking time and acting upon that practice used the movements of the heavens in the night sky. Jonathan Powell’s book Rare Astronomical Sights and Sounds chronicles, in a learned but readable fashion, the development of astronomy, examined some of its most common and also rarest phenomena, and discussed theories yet to be tested. Gerrard Russell’s review succeeds in enticing us to get the book, even if occasionally the reviewer makes a bobble or two (“Northern and Southern Lights phenomena in Iceland, Finland, Norway and Sweden”?; “IDA” acronym not explicated). Next we have A Letter from Charles Bowen, November 23, 1966 which deals with intellectual property issues and the Flying Saucer Review editor’s interesting remarks about Frank Edwards, as John Keel webmaster Doug Skinner notes. This next Letter from Charles Bowen, January 11, 1967 contains a “nugget” of information that might seriously intrigue Kevin Randle and other Socorro sighting investigators, which points out why reading these short entries has potential specific benefits in additional to their general historical value.
